Touriga Nacional: The Queen of Portuguese Grape Varieties
Touriga Nacional is Portugal’s finest red grape variety — structured, complex and with great ageing potential. Native to the Douro, it is characterised by elegant tannins, fresh acidity and aromas of raspberry, blackberry and spices.
Regions
Douro (mineral, 10–20 years), Bairrada (fresh, 8–15 years), Dão (elegant, 6–12 years) and Lisbon (modern, 4–8 years).
Profile
Deep purple colour that develops into garnet. On the palate, it has structured but never harsh tannins. When young, it is vibrant and fruity; as it ages, it gains complexity and notes of leather and tobacco.
Choosing
Look for Designations of Origin (DOC), reputable producers, and an alcohol content of 13–14.5 per cent. Avoid generic labels.
Pairing
Perfect with red meat, game, mature cheese and even dark chocolate (70%+ cocoa). Serve at 13–16°C.
Ageing
Ageing well in oak (18–24 months) and in the bottle (15–20 years). Quality ensures protection against oxidation.
